We caught up with Paddington Steve for a chat about Terrace Culture, Music and of course the Football. Thanks for joining us at Proper Football. Let's start with you telling us a bit about yourself. I’m in my 50’s now and a dad to 6 kids, other than my family my biggest passions in life are football, Clobber and music. Who's your team and how did you first start supporting them? I support QPR Because I’m born n bred in West London, so it’s the law hahaha. and most of my family support them, Also my Dad and my Uncle Dave basically told me I’m QPR and that’s it. When and why did you first get in to Casual culture? I was originally a Skinhead, I loved a Fred Perry and a Cheesecutter Cap, I then progressed into a Casual in the early 80’s. I think my first bits of Clothing was an Ellesse polo shirt and Maroon Lois cords with a pair of Adidas or Diadora. In your opinion who/where did casual start? I know there’s a big North/South dispute about this, I honestly don’t know where it started and at the end of the day we are all Casual/Dressers so who cares. But I think we wore it better down south hahaha, Alright let’s shake hands and call it a draw. Favourite piece of terrace attire? There are loads but for me personally I’d say a diamond Pringle or a Fila BJ track top, Lois jeans or cords and THE trainers EITHER Adidas Trimm TrabS or Forest Hill. But for me, the king of the casual trainer is the Diadora Borg Elite (Gold ones) topped off with a Dearstalker HAT. Least favourite trend you've witnessed on the terraces? It’s got to be the Bay City Rollers look, Flares, a tank top that looks like a wallpaper pattern and the scarf round the wrist. Saying that, I’m from the 70’s so I wore flares and looked like an extra from The Sweeney! Who in your opinion were the best-turned-out mobs in the 80s casual era? Straight away the first mob that springs to mind is Arsenal, I always thought they looked the part in the 80’s bowling up the road in Long Macs, Deerstalkers and carrying golf umbrellas, well some of them did. Also my lot QPR were good dressers, well, we did have the legendary shop Stuarts on our doorstep, plus Sharp Sports in Kensington and I had a shop called Temples in Church Street in Paddington where I got my first Sergio Tacchini tracksuit from. Britain has seen many subcultures come and go, in your opinion what is it about the Casual movement that keeps it still going? The Casual scene is still going strong now because the youngsters latched on to it after the Nick Love films and Cass Pennants Casuals documentary. And people like Neil Primett make it easy for us to buy now, so us old lot you know the XXXXL lot can relive our youth. I love seeing people in the old gear, you always get that little nod of appreciation from each other. Don’t worry about age, if you like it wear it. In our opinion the music has always been an important part of Terrace Culture. What would be your favourite tunes for a match day? Match day tunes for me is usually a bit of late 80’s early 90’s house music, and a proper bit of Acid House and Rave/Breakbeat. Do you have a favourite album/single of all time? My favourite album of all time is without doubt Quadrophenia by The Who, and my favourite single would be 'Won’t get fooled again' by The Who. Favourite band/artist? The Who, Madness and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Any bands/artist that you feel are part of Terrace Culture? Well, in the 80’s it was Accent, they was linked to Chelsea, these days for me it’s The Goldborns, out of West London. They are a great band linked to QPR, they’ve even done a video for a song on an away coach trip with some of the chaps. You were involved in the early Acid House scene, how did you first get in to it? I’ve always been linked to the music scene one way or another, from the late 80’s I was going to events all over London AND around the UK and at Amnesia in Ibiza the best club I’ve ever been in. I’ve got mates that used to and still do put on big events, they are some of the biggest DJ’s, MC’s and producers out there. I’m still good friends with them today and now take my kids when they do daytime Raves. My oldest mate is Nicky Blackmarket and he had the best record shop going in Soho London, when raves went legal you used to be able to get tickets from there for Raves like the legendary Raindance and others. Any stories from those days? If you can remember lol A good memory was having Keith Flint (R.I.P) and the Prodigy boys raving with us, then going on stage to do a live pa of ‘Your Love’ and ‘Charly at Raindance Jenkins lane. A funny memory was me driving a removal van all the way over from Paddington to Plumstead, for a rave called Utopia or Desire? at Tasco Warehouse with 15 mates in the back and the pills starting to kick in half way there. On to a bit about the football, sum up your teams season so far. I can only describe QPR’s season so far as like an episode of Some Mothers Do ‘Av ‘Em or a Carry On filM, Proper carnage. Do you still attend games regularly? I don’t really go much anymore but I do take my kids every now and then, it’s always nice to see the old faces. My kids do say how comes you know so many people Dad, and I say well it’s because we are a family over here. We’ve always been a small club so you have to look out for each other, and that includes away from footbalL, I’ve always said for me that I met strangers that became friends, who then became family. Which club traditionally are your biggest rivals? For me personally, Chelsea back in the day before they got rich, we also had a little thing with Arsenal in the 80’s that included a few incidents around London. But really the biggest rivalry has to be Luton. A lot of fans have been drawn towards lower/non league football recently. Any one else you follow? I used to pop to a few Dover games many years ago, so I still look out for the results. Any views on this year's World Cup in Qatar? To be honest it was actually a good World Cup, don’t like where it was held and the timing, it should be a summer tournament. Sum up Modern football in one sentence. It drives me mad, From people filming every bit of the game on phones to this Ultra stuff, and even the food they sell now, it’s a football match not a Gordon Ramsey restaurant. Whatever happened to a Wagon Wheel and Bovril.

England World Cup winner George Cohen has died, aged 83. The right-back played every minute of the six matches in the 1966 tournament and was vice-captain for the 4-2 win over West Germany in the Wembley final. Cohen, who spent his entire club career with Fulham, won 37 caps for England. "Very sad to hear my friend and England team-mate has died," said Sir Geoff Hurst, who is one of the two surviving members of that 1966 side, along with Sir Bobby Charlton. "Everyone, without exception, always said that George was such a lovely man. He will be sadly missed, my heartfelt thoughts are with George's wife Daphne and his family," George joined Fulham professionally in 1956 and remained there until retirement through injury 13 years later in March 1969. Fulham had been relegated to the Second Division the season before he retired as a player and did not return to the top flight for 33 years. - Dan Slawson
What's your name and where are you from? My name is Dan Slawson aka Danny Choo Choo lol, born and bred in Dulwich, South London. How long have you been DJ'ing? Only been DJ'ing on radio stations for the last few years but have been an avid collector of house music for over 30 years but was more into enjoying myself and listening to others playing the music in the clubs lol. 😵 What genres do you play? Mostly House, Soul-Funk Disco. What shows can we hear from you on Proper Football Radio? You can find me in the Proper Football Cafe every Saturday at 10 am playing a bit of everything, along with a football quiz and shit football tips 😂 I also do the House music express and Soul-Funk-Disco train shows when I'm not driving real trains about. Lol Who are your favourite bands or artists? Never been a big follower of bands but have always liked The Jam, The Style Council, Jamiroquai, and more recently The Skinner Brothers, artist wise, I grew up on Barry White being played by my old man, so I think that's where my love of soulful Funky Disco music come from lol. I'm more into DJs and producers what with being a house head, Frankie Knuckles is without a doubt my biggest inspiration and the reason I got into house music having had the privilege of seeing him DJ many times and being blown away, also, joey negro, Paul Trouble Anderson and CJ Macintosh who were pioneers of the UK house scene are right up there for me. Favourite single/album of all time? So hard to pick one, but, Frankie Knuckles Presents Satoshi Tomiie - Tears has got to be one of my favourites, a timeless classic. Which team do you support? Crystal Palace. How did you start supporting them? Have to hold my hands up and admit I like many young kids in the early 80s was a Liverpool fan 🙈 but thankfully one of my brothers took me to see Paul Hinshelwood's testimonial game for Palace against QPR in 1984 for my first match and that was me hooked! Favourite player? There's been a few lol, Captain Jim Cannon was a favourite at first then obviously when Ian Wright came on the scene he was unbelievable, but one player I really admired was Matt Jansen who we bought from Carlisle after he turned down Man United, he was a fantastic player and was on the brink of an England call up but had a moped crash on holiday and was never the same, definitely someone who could've made it to the top, can't not mention Wilfred Zaha who other fans love to hate lol but on his day is unplayable. some fantastic young players coming through now with a thriving academy so no doubt my next favourite player will soon change lol. Most memorable match? Without a doubt the 4-3 FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool in 1990 at Villa Park, considering we lost 9-0 at Anfield a few months earlier made it even sweeter Best away day? So many good memories over the years from trips up and down the country in our minibus out of our local pub in West Dulwich, a weekend away in Plymouth, and up at Blackburn in the playoffs at Ewood Park spring to mind. I also remember being at Elland Road on a Tuesday night with only a few hundred Palace there, we scored the winner and I remember running down the big terrace to celebrate with the players only to trip over and then start rolling down the concrete steps for what seemed like an age and finally getting back on my feet only to see the game had kicked off again lol then hearing my mates start singing “you fat bastard” at me which then travelled around the whole ground with 30,000 Leeds fans joining in! 😂😂😂 Great days lol. 🙈 what else do you do on Proper Football? you can catch me on the proper football live show some weeks with some of the other chaps which goes out on all our social media platforms and on proper football radio every Sunday evening. also looking to get out and do some more of our awayday vlogs around the country at some non-league grounds, you can catch up on the vlogs we have done by going to our YouTube channel.
- maurice redpath
Who's your team and how did you first start supporting them? I have been a Rangers fan since 1973 when my father took me to see them play Hearts as a 3-year-old. Although I have lived in Portsmouth since 1989 so i have a strong affinity with them also. When and why did you first get into Casual culture? I first got into the casual culture in the mid'80s as I was driven by the objective to be different and wear smart clothing. In your opinion who/where did casual start? In my opinion, the casual culture started with the Liverpool fans and their European exploits. Favourite piece of terrace attire? I have a couple of vintage pieces that I love. my Aquascutum duffle coat and Burberry cardigan also my ZX600'S. what's the Least favourite trend you've witnessed on the terraces? I was never really into pod sandals that everyone was wearing during the mid to late 80's. Is there anything you would love to own but just can't get your hands on it. I had a Burberry leather duffle coat back in the day, would love to be able to get my hands on one of those again. There's a lot of newer independent clothing labels popping up all the time. Anything that struck you that stands out from the rest? I love a load of the independent labels that have sprung up over the past few years and regularly I buy them as I think that the quality they're producing is as good if not better than the mainstream big boys. In our opinion the music has always been an important part of Terrace Culture. What would be your favourite tunes for a match day? Always been a huge Jam fan but quite often listen to underground dance music on a match day. Do you have a favourite album/single of all time? Down in the tube station at midnight by the Jam. Favourite band/artist? The Jam. Any bands/artist that you feel are part of Terrace Culture? Lots of bands associated with terrace culture going back to The Jam, Oasis New Order etc Any up-and-coming bands you can recommend? the Skylights. Did you get into the dance music scene in the late 80's/ early 90's? Yes, i was a regular doing the M25 runs on a Saturday night from 89-92. On to a bit about the football... sum up your team's season so far. Disappointing. Do you still attend games regularly? I mainly go to Non-League matches these days. Which club traditionally are your biggest rivals? Celtic, Southampton. A lot of fans have been drawn towards lower/non-league football recently. is there Anyone else you follow? I am a season ticket holder at Gosport Borough. Any views on this year's World Cup in Qatar? I have been boycotting the world cup this year. Sum up Modern football in one sentence. Overpriced and totally alien to the roots of the game.
- Terrace Culture Interview
We caught up with Paul Smith from Clobber Magazine and asked him a few questions about his passion for clothes, football and the Terrace Culture casual scene. 1. Who's your team and how did you first start supporting them? Man Utd, although I grew up right next to Man City's original ground at Main Road. I had no interest in City whatsoever! I remember first hearing about Matt Busby, the Munich Air disaster and how Manchester United rose from the tragedy with Best, Law and Charlton... and that was it... I was hooked! 2. When and why did you first get into Casual culture? Around about 1981/82, I was just a little kid minding the cars of the Man City fans, a local hustle of all the kids in Moss Side and Fallowfield areas on match days. I remember seeing a mob of City lads leaving the ground early, they were decked out in Adidas trainers, Pringle sweaters, Fila and Sergio Tacchini track tops and what I later found out were Lois Cords. You could say it was my Goodfellas moment, I knew I wanted to be part of them, its where I belonged!!!!!!"!" 3. In your opinion who/where did casual start? In Liverpool & Manchester, Liverpool first though... it's simply beyond dispute! The Mickeys were always away in Europe and were bringing back gear that no one else could get. And just as in Manchester the flares and boots had been replaced with straight leg or semi flared jeans and trainers. The cockneys just can't handle the truth about the origins of the movement, but the history is there for all to see, well for those who choose to see it! 4. Favourite piece of terrace attire? The CP Company Mille Miglia (Goggle Jacket), there's nothing quite like it (and its countless iterations)! It just stands out from any other item of clothing, even when it's on a hanger, it's got a life of its own... as if someone is already inside it, wearing it. It's a wearable piece of art, and for me it's the ultimate bit of gear! 5. Least favourite trend you've witnessed on the terraces? The whole Geography Teacher look the Mickeys started off around 1983'ish, it spread to Manchester a bit too, thankfully it didn't last! Oh, and the whole Deerstalker hat thing, WTF was that all about!!! 6. I believe you're a bit of a collector, what is your most prized possession? Indeed, although I am always buying and selling, and I am not hung up on keeping hold of all my Vintage pieces (although I've kept a good few)! Casual was all about moving with the times, so it's still very important to me to do exactly that. At the moment my favourite piece is a rather understated Stone Island "Compact" Jacket from season SS 2005. It still looks brand new today, and it outstrips most modern pieces! 7. Is there anything you would love to own but just can't get your hands on it? Yes, most original Fiorucci pieces, in particular the jeans... superb clobber from a superb brand. I also really miss the vintage Valentino stuff, their modern (garish) gear is complete and utter shite, and its waaaaaaaaay overpriced too! 8. You run Clobber Magazine. Tell us a bit about it. Yes, Clobber Magazine is an online platform that kind of does what it says on the tin, we write about Clobber, Trainers, and occasionally Music... and of course all things casual! It started as a passion project and has just become one of my best mates! It opened a lot of doors for me and through my humble scribblings I've met some truly great people. So, all in all, I owe it a lot. It's also very outspoken when needed and a few arses on the Casual scene have been stung via our Facebook rants! 9. What is your hopes for the future of the magazine. I am really not sure TBH, I've been at a crossroads with it for a while, I might go into a partnership with someone at some point and take it on a more commercial footing. In saying that I still really like the underground, indie status that it has so who knows! 10. I see you visited the 'Art of Casual ' exhibition at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool, any good? Absolutely Brilliant!!!!! The photos online really don't do it justice! As well as the visual exhibits it also maps the history of the Casual movement and Liverpool's role in it. I will probably go back a few more times before it closes in March because there's so much to see and take in. It was a really emotional experience for me too, it took me back to the great days if my youth. So, if you're ever in Liverpool before March 2023 I recommend that you go and take a look. 11. In our opinion the music has always been an important part of Terrace Culture. What would be your favourite tunes for a match day? Wow so many really, growing up in Moss Side & Fallowfield a lot of us were bang into Street soul, Reggae, Hip Hop. Of course, being a Manc I was also into The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division etc. I can be blasting out a hard Ragga track one minute then flipping to the Sex Pistols the next, so pretty much anything goes depending on my mood! 12. Do you have a favourite album/single of all time? That's another really tough one because my musical tastes are so varied now. I'd say in terms of commercial music I'd probably say, 'Good to be free' by Oasis, or maybe a dead heat between that and 'Shadow play' by Joy Division. If I was picking an underground track I'd go for 'Shining Through', it's a classic 1990 Street soul track by a group called 'Gold In The Shade'. It was only pressed in limited numbers, of course I've got copy!!! 13. Favourite band/artist? Commercially I have so many really... including, Joy Division, The Smiths, and anything Liam Gallagher, the Pistols, The Jam, and the most underrated of them all...... 'The Las'!!! 14. Any bands/artist that you feel are part of Terrace Culture? Loads really, I remember The Smiths being huge amongst many of the Firms, The Jam of course and a lot of smaller indie bands. The Stone Roses seem to have become a firm favourite amongst many Casuals. But I suppose it's all subjective, I remember speaking to a West Ham lad on holiday years ago and for him 'Sham 69' were the ultimate Casuals band... Oi Oi Oi...! Liam Gallagher has also really become ingrained within the Casual scene, but I attribute most of that to the clobber he wears... although I do love his music! 15. Manchester has been a hot spot for music for quite a while. Any local up and coming bands you can recommend? I quite like 'Working Men's Club', although I don't know if they can still be classed as up and coming now! There's another band I quite like called 'Delights'; they knock out some decent indie pop/funky stuff. 16. Obviously the Hacienda and dance scene is now obviously world famous. Did you get into that scene in the late 80's/ early 90's? Yeah of course, the whole '2nd Summer of Love' thing fell right into my lap as I was just leaving School at that time. It really was a magical time, although I was still mainly a Soul boy, I also loved the emerging dance scene, and everything it had to offer!!!! I only actually went to the Hacienda twice though, I much preferred clubs like 'Precinct 13' and 'The X Club'... and the famous Canal Bar. 17. On to a bit about the football....sum up your team's season so far. Steady progress with the inevitable slip up and bad thrashing here and there (AKA the Man City game)! Ten Hag is top draw and if he's given the time and the backing, I am confident he can bring the title back to Old Trafford. As for Ronaldo, I only have two words... LEGACY RUINED!!!! 18. Do you still attend games regularly? A lot fewer and far between now, the modern era has killed it, killed the fun, and the joy of standing on the terraces. Old Trafford has been sorely affected by United's worldwide fame, which in turn has killed the atmosphere on many occasions. Mid-week games are the best, and of course those ropey away trips (say no more)!! A lot of fans have been drawn towards lower/non-league football recently. Anyone else you follow? I personally never got into the whole FC United of Manchester thing (the breakaway fans club). Rightly or wrongly those that chose that path were labelled as traitors! I quite like the lower leagues though; in fact, I might get over to a Tranmere Rovers game at some point this season. Any views on this year's World Cup in Qatar? It's an absolute disgrace. It's all about money. All those poor people have died building the stadiums, and yet all the woke, self-serving virtue signallers (Gary Neville, Gary Lineker etc) are all flocking to Qatar in their droves... to pick up their fat pay cheques! I am only gonna watch the England games, just solely out of the love of our great nation. As for the rest I shan't be partaking!! Finally Paul, Sum up Modern football in one sentence. Ruined, it's been stolen from the working man, to be replaced by the shirt wearing (popcorn eating) 'NEW FANS'. I honestly can't wait until the arse falls out of it; I mean come on... the money that's currently in football cannot be sustained. And alas, we (The Casuals) shall take over the grounds once again, and we'll... "Do what we want, we'll do what weeeee waaaaaant, we are the Casuals, and we'll do what we want!!!! Thanks for talking to us at Proper Football Paul. You can check out Clobber Magazine here, https://clobbermag.com/ Like Comment

- DEL CLevelANd INTERVIEW
Hi DEl, Thanks for joining us. Who's your team and how did you first start supporting them? I support Brentford FC. Griffin Park was just over the road from where I lived so it was a no brainer really. My Dads family came from BOW, so he supported the Hammers. When and why did you first get into Casual culture? I was a Skinhead growing up from the age of 13 until I was 15/16 and so was everyone i knew on the estate and also at school but in the last 6 weeks holiday before going into the then known 5th year, we sort of morphed into Casuals, grew our skinheads out and got wedges, so 16 I suppose. In your opinion who/where did casual start? I had a pair of adidas kick when i was 12 years old, does that make me a casual? does that mean it started in the south? it's a discussion that's been going on for donkeys. I had a season ticket from the late seventies too the late nineties and all I know is when we played team's that were not from London, they didn't dress like us. Coming from a housing estate a lot of my mates supported other teams like QPR, Chelsea, & West ham and if Brentford were away and I wasn't going, I used to go with them and again if they were playing clubs that was not from London, they didn't dress like us. At the end of the day let's all just be pleased it started in our lifetime, what a great era. Favourite piece of terrace attire? I'm an adidas trainer enthusiast (don't like the word collector) so it changes every day. First pair as mentioned before were kick, but i am partial to a London and anything Spezial. Least favourite trend you've witnessed on the terraces? Donkey Jackets & Flares. I believe you're a bit of a collector, what is your most prized possession? My Liam Gallaghers. Is there anything you would love to own but just can't get your hands on it. Brooksy's adidas ZX550 or an Ardwick both in a 7. There's a lot of newer independent clothing labels popping up all the time. Anything that struck you that stands out from the rest? A few to be fair, Grand Alliance. Project North. James Darby. Everyday Garments, Old School fc. In our opinion the music has always been an important part of Terrace Culture. What would be your favourite tunes for a match day? Ska, Trojan, Soul, Motown bit of Northern growing up. But for me once the Casual/Terrace seen started it was Jazz Funk all the way for me and all my mates, Football during the day then Clubbing of a night time so it went hand in hand back then, so yes. I'm more of an Indie buff these days but still heavily into the mentioned genres. Do you have a favourite album/single of all time? No, I don't as there are too many to mention, depends what mood I'm in. Favourite band/artist? An unending list, although I have started a pin badge leg tattoo of artists/bands who I love from my youth to now. Any bands/artist that you feel are part of Terrace Culture? Loads, more indie and rock n roll though, I think. the Gallaghers Brothers are into Terrace attire and Football among others. Any up-and-coming bands you can recommend? Locked-in, The Chase, The Trojan Beats, Andrew Cushin and Mindsight to name a few. Last and next gig you will be going to? I love a gig and go to load's; Me & the Mrs love live music. Jamie T last Friday and Last Saturday cover bands The Clone Roses, The Smiths Ltd & Oasish. This Friday I'm seeing a cover band called the Style Councillors. Did you get into the dance music scene in the late 80's/ early 90's? Late 80s yes House etc. Started a family from 1990 (have 5 Kids) Didn't really get right into the rave seen as much as others preferred live music and started to get into Indie. On to a bit about the football.... sum up your team's season so far. Not bad mid table, just a dream for them to be in the premiership as I've waited all my life for it. Do you still attend games regularly? Not as much as I would like as I'm always busy, went to a couple of games last season but don't hold a season Ticket anymore but have still been a member for years. always watching on TV or streaming these days. Which club traditionally are your biggest rivals? QPR & Fulham although have good mates who support both of them clubs so all good fun. All clubs have to move with the times, but do you miss Griffin Park? Yes, the old Griffin Park with the Royal Oak end, loved that ground, But the new ground is really nice although it needs to be bigger especially if we stay up in the premiership. The Premier LEAGUE, is it everything you hoped it would be? Yes! at the moment, we're not really struggling at the bottom as a lot of people thought we would be and relegated after the first season. Mid table and beat some good teams so all's tip top. A lot of fans have been drawn towards lower/non-league football recently. Anyone else you follow? Nope, I'm Just a Bee. Any views on this year's World Cup in Qatar? I'm not feeling it to be fair, I'm normally all over it, everyone is normally ringing one another to go round each other's gaffs to watch a match but this year it's quiet, there ain't a St. Georges flag anywhere around here, think it's because where & when it is. Sum up Modern football in one sentence. Different. Follow DEl on Instagram https://instagram.com/delcleveland66?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
